Prather Ranch is honored to be among the first operations to earn the Certified Humane designation from Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC) certification.
Gentle handling is essential to the Prather Ranch operation to ensure the cattle are humanely treated. The ranch ascribes to gentle handling practices of animal behavior experts such as Dr. Temple Grandin and Bud Williams. All of the movements and facilities are oriented to the gentle, humane, respectful treatment that the cattle receive during their lifespan. As an extra precaution, Prather Ranch has its own cattle truck for the transportation of the cattle herd from one ranch to the other to maintain the sanitation and biosecuriety of the closed herd.
Minimal transport and gentle handling is recognized not only for its humane attributes, but also for its impact on animal stress and product quality. The connection between stress and quality is discussed in literature ranging from beef industry handling studies to ANSI/AAMI/ISO 22442-2 Section 5.2.
